Homemakers and Home Health Aides (HHA):  Home Care Assistance for Veterans

Trained professionals provide personalized care in the home to meet each veteran’s specific needs, including activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, ambulating, incontinence care, medication reminders, as well as housekeeping tasks like laundry and meal preparation. Such care provides compassion and comfort for the mental health of our veterans, allowing loved ones to age in their own homes with grace and safety.

Respite Care: Trusted Professional Care for Your Loved One so You Can Take Care of Yourself

Amada Senior Care and the VA understand the toll that taking care of a loved one can take! In an effort to reduce family caregiver stress and burnout, and to support the health and well-being of both veterans and their caregivers, the VA offers respite care in which a professional caregiver can relieve a family member on a regular basis. During that time, the family member can take a well-deserved break or attend to other household matters, confident that the senior loved one is in the capable, trusted hands of an Amada caregiver. VA Aid and Attendance:  A Benefit Program for Veterans and Their Surviving Spouses

This is another program providing home care but is available to surviving spouses or can be used alone or in conjunction with HHA to get more comprehensive care for a veteran. These qualifications need to be met.

1. Military Service Requirement

  • Veteran applicants must need assistance with ADLs, including walking, eating, dressing, or toileting.
  • Applicants must have served at least 90 days of active duty; at least one day of active duty service must have been during wartime.
  • Veterans cannot have been dishonorably discharged.

2. Personal Care Needs of Applicant

3. Applicant Income

  • Most of the applicant’s income must currently be spent on care expenses.
  • The overall percentage of income currently being spent on senior care or health services will determine the amount and types of benefits received.

  • The VA is in charge of determining an acceptable threshold for each applicant’s assets.
  • The applicant’s age and financial need determine financial assets.
