Says Ike, “The first place we ever rented as newlyweds was a loft in an old textile mill that had been turned into condos. Sixty percent of our neighbors were 65 or older. We didn’t know it yet, but we’d just signed up to attend the best parties of our lives!”

“Over time we became friends with everyone, and they told us why they’d chosen that building: it let them age in place, surrounded by community. They were fit and funny. Some were recovering from falls or surgeries and still living fully and independently, in their own homes. Watching them thrive there, along with our own backgrounds caring for family, is what led us to open Amada Senior Care Los Altos.”

Sammy recalls, “Recently, someone in our family needed a caregiver after a medical intervention. We watched that caregiver work with him until he was steady enough to walk on his own. Now, in his seventies, he’s on TikTok! We’ve seen what intentional, present care can do for a family we love, and we want to bring that same care to seniors here.”

Adds Ike, “Caring for aging family members isn’t new to us, it’s how we were raised. As a girl, I’d watch my parents sit for hours with the seniors around us. They weren’t trying to fix anything. They were listening, learning to sit inside someone else’s pace and silence.”

“I watched that same patience at home, with my grandmother, sitting and chatting, letting her know she was a huge part of our world even though she’d lost most of her hearing. She still lit up at our jokes and cracked a few herself. Day after day, we showed up with the same steadiness as the day before. I understood, before I had words for it, that caring for someone who has spent a lifetime giving to others is one of the most honoring things you can do.”
