Donuts, Boundaries, and Building a Better Senior Care Network in North Georgia

There’s something about the smell of coffee and a box of donuts that just makes networking feel a little more human. Last week, I attended my very first 515 Senior Resource Group meeting at First Baptist Church of Jasper, and it was the perfect mix of caffeine, connection, and community purpose.

I was invited by Maureen Kukla, Cofounder of 515 and Admissions Director at PruittHealth – Jasper, and I quickly realized this was more than a simple meet-and-greet. It was a room full of professionals who genuinely care about seniors in our North Georgia communities, from Ball Ground to Jasper and beyond.

The Power of the 515 Senior Resource Group

The group’s mission, 515 Senior Resource Group is a professional networking group dedicated to sharing resources, knowledge, and services to better support seniors. Its members include senior service providers, healthcare professionals, and community educators who work together to improve outcomes for older adults and their families.

That’s not just a nice tagline – you can feel it in the conversations. There’s an energy in the room that says, “We’re in this together.” And for anyone working in senior care, that kind of collaboration is priceless.

Presenters Who Protect

The morning’s presentation was led by Misty Dove and Jeff Limbaugh, both Adult Protective Services Investigators with the Georgia Department of Human Services, Division of Aging Services (aging.ga.gov). They walked us through what Adult Protective Services (APS) actually does and what steps to take when elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation is suspected.

APS investigates reports involving at-risk adults – individuals who may be unable to protect themselves due to physical or cognitive limitations. Their message was simple but powerful: if you see something, say something. Reports can be made by calling 866-552-4464 or by visiting aging.ga.gov and clicking “Report Elder Abuse.”

As professionals in this field, we sometimes see things others might overlook. Their presentation was a needed reminder that our vigilance can literally change or save a life.

The Role of the Area Agency on Aging

Also in attendance was Jenny Williams, HCBS Case Manager with the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission’s Area Agency on Aging (nwgrc.gov). Their agency coordinates a wide range of programs designed to help seniors remain as independent as possible – from home-delivered meals and transportation assistance to caregiver support and case management.

In short, they’re one of the backbone organizations quietly holding up our senior support network.

A Local Partner with Heart: PruittHealth – Jasper

Since this meeting was held in Maureen’s backyard, it’s only fitting to recognize PruittHealth – Jasper as a local cornerstone of compassionate care. PruittHealth provides skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and transitional services throughout Georgia. Having someone like Maureen – who not only represents her organization but also cofounded 515, shows just how committed our community leaders are to strengthening North Georgia’s senior care ecosystem.

A Personal Reflection

As the Owner of Amada Senior Care Cumming & North Georgia, I left that meeting feeling both inspired and challenged. Inspired, because I saw firsthand the depth of care and collaboration happening right here in our region. Challenged, because elder abuse is real and it’s closer than we think.

Our role at Amada is to make sure seniors receive the support they need, whether through in-home care, placement services, or simply by being a trusted resource when families don’t know where to start. That means keeping our eyes open, our hearts engaged, and our coffee strong.

A Shared Responsibility

Senior abuse doesn’t always look dramatic. Sometimes it’s subtle neglect, financial exploitation, or quiet isolation. But every professional in the room that morning understood one thing: awareness is protection.
