Non-medical caregiving for U.S. veterans includes a range of supportive services that enhance their daily lives and overall well-being. This can involve assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as meal preparation, housekeeping, transportation to appointments, and companionship to combat loneliness. Caregivers can also provide emotional support, help with managing schedules, and offer respite care for family members. Additionally, they may assist with errands, mobility support, and engaging veterans in social and recreational activities to promote a sense of community and purpose. These services ensure that veterans maintain their independence while receiving the care and attention they deserve.

Becoming an Amada caregiver is a deeply rewarding experience, filled with moments of genuine connection and compassion. It offers the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life, whether by providing companionship, assisting with daily tasks, or simply offering a comforting presence. The role fosters patience, empathy, and a profound appreciation for the strength and resilience of others. Seeing the impact of your kindness and care firsthand brings a unique sense of fulfillment, turning everyday moments into meaningful acts of service and love.

As the owners of Amada Senior Care Ocean County, Karen and Mike DeSimone have set the highest standard of quality care for seniors living in Point Pleasant, Brick, Manchester, Whiting, Toms River, Seaside, Island Heights, Berkeley Township, Lacey Township, Barnegat, Manahawkin, Long Beach Island (LBI), West Creek, Tuckerton, Little Egg Harbor, and beyond.

Serving our population of cherished seniors is a family tradition for the Amada Ocean County team and each member has experience supporting seniors with the challenges of aging at home and being a resource to their loved ones. For sisters Karen DeSimone and Lissa Wacha, community service practically is in their DNA. Karen and Lissa’s father came to the US from the Philippines in the early 1970s to complete his internal medicine residency program at Jersey Shore University Hospital. After completion, he started a private practice in Toms River and was on staff at Community Medical Center. He served the Toms River community for more than 20 years. During that time, the sisters observed their father’s care and compassion for his patients and the authentic relationships he built with them and their families.

Says Karen, “Patients would often tell me what a kind and caring doctor my father was and the impact that he had on their lives.” Her father’s legacy inspired Karen to pursue a career in pharmaceutical sales in Toms River. Karen built strong partnerships with healthcare practitioners in the area while serving the community with much success over the past 21 years.

Lissa also developed a passion for caregiving at an early age, leading her to become a registered nurse (RN) who now has more than 31 years of nursing experience in Toms River. She, too, worked at Community Medical Center for over 20 years as a bedside nurse in several departments, a nurse educator for all areas of the hospital and eventually as a case manager. Most recently, Lissa worked as a case manager and marketing director for an acute rehab facility and a skilled nursing facility. She will apply her healthcare experience and knowledge as Director of Nursing and Client Relations at Amada Ocean County. Says Lissa, “Caring for patients and advocating for the most optimal care for them has been the most rewarding aspect of my nursing career and being able to continue patient advocacy is what inspired me to be a part of Amada Senior Care Ocean County.”

The challenge of in-home senior caregiving hit home for Karen and Mike when Mike’s dad became seriously ill a few years ago. According to Mike, “My dad never wanted to be in a nursing home, but my mom didn’t know that home care was even an option for him. We reluctantly placed him in a facility where he received inadequate care which led to him being admitted to the hospital. We would have felt more comfortable having him cared for in his own home. From our own experience, we know how emotionally stressful this can be for a family and we want to be able to help others navigate the difficulties of the senior care process so that their loved ones receive the high-quality care they deserve.”

Karen, Mike, Lissa, and everyone on the Amada Senior Care Ocean County team have made it their life’s purpose to provide exceptional caregiving services to our vulnerable senior population. They understand that one of the most important responsibilities family members have is to ensure their aging loved ones are receiving the level of care that meets their unique needs in an environment where they are healthy, safe and thriving. This can be a daunting task and many families are not aware of the options and resources that are available for their senior loved ones. As senior care experts and advocates, the team of professionals at Amada Senior Care Ocean County would like to make this process as straightforward and convenient as possible so we can provide the highest quality in-home care either for yourself or a loved one …

… because we truly know what it’s like to care for family members.
