A Valentine’s Day Surprise: Care That Goes Beyond the Basics

Spreading Joy Through Senior Care and Caregiver Culture in Sioux Falls

When Centerville Care and Rehab shared that residents would love Valentine’s Day cards, the community responded in a big way. Hundreds of cards poured in.

We loved seeing that kind of support. But we also wanted to show up in our own way.

Building Compassion into Caregiver Orientation

During our recent caregiver orientation at Amada Senior Care Sioux Falls, our newest team members created a giant handmade Valentine’s card together. Markers and stickers out. Creativity flowing. A simple way to start their journey with us. Orientation isn’t just about policies and procedures. It’s about setting the tone for the kind of care we want to provide – compassionate, respectful, and attentive.

The card became a reflection of that culture.

An Added Surprise

Rather than quietly dropping it off, the card was delivered as a surprise singing telegram.

No professional vocals.

No video evidence.  (We tried, but it didn’t record. :))

But plenty of smiles.

It was a small moment. but small moments matter.

Why Culture Matters in In-Home Care

Families searching for in-home care in Sioux Falls are often navigating uncertainty. They want safety, reliability, and support. But they also want something less tangible: Warmth. Presence. Compassion.

We believe care at home should follow a clear, supportive path — one that begins with listening and continues with thoughtful planning and ongoing advocacy. But it only works when the people delivering that care understand the deeper purpose behind it.

That understanding starts on day one. We’re grateful for local senior communities like Centerville Care and Rehab that create opportunities for connection and celebration. And we’re proud of caregivers who choose to bring heart into their work.

Because great care isn’t just about what we do. It’s about how we show up.

Celebration Time! Amada Senior Care in Sioux Falls, SD is Officially Open
to Serve Our Senior Population

October marked the official grand opening of Amada Senior Care in Sioux Falls, SD. The owners of Amada Sioux Falls are Kevin and Shanygne Gullickson, who took great delight in the joyful ribbon cutting ceremony and the incredible community turnout!

Kevin and Shanygne were honored to have Dr. Ronald Place, CEO of Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, present their Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce membership and by Tammy Beintema of the American Heart Association giving a warm welcome and address.

Kevin, who leads Amada Sioux Falls as Managing Partner of Outreach & Strategic Partnerships, shared the professional care team’s heart for serving seniors and their families here in Sioux Falls, SD.

After the ribbon cutting, guests enjoyed tours of our new office, refreshments, and wonderful conversation. It was a full house, with Kevin and Shanygne thrilled to welcome some of their amazing caregivers, referral partners from the financial and insurance community, fellow in-home care providers, leaders and members of local churches, and staff from Active Generations who have supported Amada Sioux Falls since day one.

A special highlight was having Kevin and Shanygne’s in-house Amada business coach, Nylah, join in person to celebrate the milestone. And the highlight (and big hit) of the day were the Amada Senior Care Sioux Falls logo cookies from Active Generations. Everyone loved them!

Says Kevin, “We’re deeply grateful to the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce for helping us mark this special moment and to every guest who came to support us. Your presence reminds us why we do what we do — helping seniors live safely at home, advocating for long-term care insurance, and guiding families through the journey of aging.”

“Here’s to building strong partnerships and serving our cherished elders on the senior care journey with excellence!”

Amada Sioux Falls Helps Sunnycrest Retirement Village in Outreach to Veterans at Pokeyrunon’s Walk

At Amada Senior Care in Sioux Falls, we’re passionate about helping seniors and their families understand all the options available for aging in place — especially the veterans and surviving spouses who have served our country.

This is why we were honored to join residents at Sunnycrest Retirement Village in Sioux Falls for its annual Pokeyrun event — a fun day filled with great conversations and meaningful connections.

Says Amada Sioux Falls Owner Kevin Gullickson, “While the event was meant to bring smiles, it also revealed something important. During our visit, we asked how many residents are veterans or surviving spouses. Several said they were — but when we asked how many knew about VA benefits for in-home care or respite care, very few had even heard of them.”

“Even some surviving spouses of veterans didn’t realize they might qualify for the VA Aid & Attendance Benefit, which can help pay for non-medical home care and assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, meals, and companionship,” Kevin notes.

Participation in Pokeyrun inspired Kevin and the entire professional care team at Amada Sioux Falls to take on the mission of reaching out to 100 senior veterans and surviving spouses before Veterans Day week, ensuring they understand what VA benefits for home care are available and how to apply.

“We’re grateful to the Sunnycrest Retirement Village team for their partnership and shared dedication to supporting local Sioux Falls seniors,” says Kevin. “Together, we’re making sure that every veteran in the community has access to the care and benefits they’ve earned.”

Amada Senior Care Sioux Falls Supports the Step Big for Parkinson’s Walk

On Saturday, August 2, Amada Senior Care Sioux Falls was honored to take part in the Step Big for Parkinson’s event by hosting an informational booth to support individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s disease. Held here in Sioux Falls, the walk brought together a dedicated community of advocates, caregivers, and healthcare professionals—all stepping up to raise awareness and encourage hope.

We were grateful for the opportunity to connect with families, answer questions, and share resources on how non-medical in-home care can make a difference for those living with Parkinson’s. Whether it’s help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) like dressing, bathing, and mobility, or simply offering companionship and caregiver respite, we’re here to lighten the load.
