How is Aid and Attendance Eligibility Determined?
1. Military Service
- A minimum of 90 days of active duty, with at least one of those days during wartime.
- Must not have been dishonorable discharged.
2. Personal Care Needs
- Applicant must currently require assistance with activities of daily living, such as walking, eating, toileting, or dressing.
3.Income
- Majority of applicant’s income must currently be spent on care expenses.
- The percentage of income currently spent on care will determine the benefits they receive.
4.Assets
- The VA will determine an acceptable threshold for applicants’ assets.
- Determination of financial assets will depend upon age and financial need.

Amada Senior Care was extremely helpful with transitioning my aunt who has Alzheimer’s, immediately after she moved into a memory care home. She had kind and caring private caregivers with her 24/7 as she became accustomed to the caregivers and staff of the facility. There was a woman named Janice who stayed with her on her first day and night who communicated with me frequently to keep me informed of how my aunt was adjusting. She was patient and understanding with my aunt during the difficult time after leaving her home of 30 years. I’m grateful she had the extra care.

Our family’s relationship with Amada began in 2016 when my son and I broke bread over iced tea, at a Starbucks, in a shopping center, that I no longer remember. What I do remember is meeting Jonathan Burrough for the first time, a most remarkable man. We discussed a plethora of subjects surrounding the care and wellbeing of perhaps the most important person in my life, my aging mother. Amada was recommended to us by a Registered Nurse from mom’s long term care insurance company. Surprisingly Amada was also recommended to us by mom’s Trust attorney after her husband died. We were very lucky to have gotten this invaluable counsel from sources that we trusted, somewhat, because at the time we felt that senior care companies were only a step-up from rest homes and were just pricy institutional organizations staffed with apathetic and mildly concerned care givers. Jonathan Burrough (The man from Amada) changed those feelings. It is difficult for me to explain how that was possible in just a few words, you would need to meet Jonathan in person and see for yourself to realize how my conversion was even possible. It would be well worth your time in my opinion. After going on eight years of working with Amada, here is my takeaway. First, people buy from people. Trusting a company is mostly just trusting brand recognition and printed words. When it comes to trusting an organization with the care of a dear loved one, you need to meet their CEO in person to judge their worth, and then, get a signed contract. I feel we have perhaps a rare situation when it comes to judging the quality of caregivers. Our family lives with our caregivers for 8 to 12 hours daily. To be honest not all care givers are equivalent. Some are much better suited with the skills we require for the care of our elderly matriarch. Their attention to detail, watchfulness, and dedication to the job differ greatly. I recommend getting to know your caregiver well. Amada will help greatly if you cannot oversee your caregivers personally. We have had many caregivers over the years, and we are appreciative of the selectiveness by which Amada achieves compatibility with our sometimes-overbearing family situation and needs. Most of our caregivers become more than just employees, and our lives become much entwined, even long after they have moved on with their careers. Most have had the fortune and sometimes misfortune of working for other caregiver groups, but they do all agree that Amada is by far the best organization they have worked for. And that is a very important difference.

Before calling Amada I must have called at least a dozen other senior care companies. After speaking with each one I did not feel that they would provide care that was actually caring. Amada hands down is one of the best care giving companies in the San Diego area! I worked with Amada on a professional level for many years (10+) and would often refer them to families in need of in-home care giver support. Fast forward to present day, Amada was the first and only care giving company I reached out to when it came time to looking for in-home care giving support for my father-in-law who has Lewy Body Dementia. One of the owners Jonathan, went out of his way to come meet with my family and make sure he fully understood our needs. While meeting with us, Jonathan took great care to preserve my father-in-law’s dignity by including him in the conversation and developing an understanding of what was also important to my father-in-law. Jonathan put my mother-in-law at ease throughout the difficult process. Amada’s care givers were top-notch and it was clear they had a strong understanding of how to successfully work with individuals living with dementia. Most important, it was clear that all of the care givers loved the work they were doing and where doing it out of their genuine desire to help others. My mother-in-law could not praise Amada’s scheduler enough. Amada’s scheduler made it her priority to make sure my mother-in-law had all of the requested shifts covered and was always available to provide whatever support was needed. Amada made a very difficult situation less difficult and also provided our family with the opportunity to make lasting memories of taking my father-in-law fishing and out for walks on the pier prior to us having to place him in a Memory Care facility. I recently had to move my Aunt into the Meridian at Lake San Marcos. It was recommended to help ease the transition, that I should hire a caregiver for my Aunt’s first week. Amanda and Jonathan were recommended and they are both beyond fantastic. It was the weekend before the move and a last minute call and Jonathan was able to get me a caregiver and set up the schedule for the week with very short notice. All of the care givers were just fantastic and my Aunt really enjoyed them. Pearl from Amanda was fantastic as well and contacted me to let me know how my Aunt was doing.
