Overnight and 24-Hour Care in Boca Raton: When Families Need More Than a Few Hours a Day
Article Summary
Most families do not start out looking for overnight care. They start with a few hours a day, and it works for a while.
Then the nights change. A parent is up at two in the morning and does not know why. Someone falls on the way to the bathroom. A daughter realises she has not slept properly in a month.
That is usually the point when people call us about overnight or 24-hour care. Here is what it involves and how to work out which one you need.
What overnight care covers
A caregiver is in the home through the night. They help with getting ready for bed, are there for trips to the bathroom, and are awake and present if your parent gets up, becomes confused, or needs help.
It is often the first step families take beyond daytime visits, because nights are usually what breaks first.
What 24-hour and live-in care covers
Continuous cover, so someone is always there. Help with bathing and dressing, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping and transportation runs across the whole day rather than in a short window.
Families usually move to this when leaving a parent alone at any point in the day no longer feels safe.
How to tell which one you need
Ask yourself what actually goes wrong, and when.
If the difficult hours are between bedtime and morning, overnight care is usually enough. If you find yourself worrying about the middle of the afternoon as much as the middle of the night, that points to 24-hour cover.
If you are not sure, that is fine. It is what the consultation is for, and plenty of families start with one and move to the other as things change.
When dementia is part of the picture
Night-time confusion and wandering are common with dementia, and they are one of the most common reasons families reach for overnight care.
Our caregivers complete specialised training to recognise the different stages of Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and to respond to different types and severities of the condition. Care plans are built to adapt as memory, communication and behaviour change.
What it means for the family
The person who has been doing the nights gets to sleep again.
That matters more than it sounds. Most of the families we meet have one person carrying far more than the others, and they are usually running on very little rest by the time they call us.
Paying for overnight and 24-hour care
Long-term care insurance. If your parent holds a policy, we handle the claim. We read the policy, file the paperwork, track the elimination period and bill the carrier directly. Most home care agencies still do not do this.
VA Aid and Attendance. Wartime veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for a monthly VA benefit that can go toward in-home care. Eligibility depends on service dates, medical need, income and assets. We can tell you quickly whether it is worth pursuing.
What to ask before you commit
Is the overnight caregiver awake through the night?
Will it be the same person each night?
